What isnet metering?

Net metering is a billing system that allows solar owners to be credited for the excess electricity their solar panels send back to the electric grid. Most states have some sort of net metering programs in place that give homeowners more of an incentive to install solar on their homes. Net metering is the relationship between solar owners and their utility companies. It monitors how much electricity a homeowner’s solar panels are making thats pushed back out to the grid and compare it to how much electricity the home are consuming from the grid.

There is no federal net metering program in place, so the programs vary depending on the state and the utility company.
